Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s The Little Mermaid Jr. 8pm, Jennie T. Anderson Theatre at the Cobb Civic Cente, 548 South Marietta Pkwy SE, Marietta. Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s junior Lyric will take you “under the sea” with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR., adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production. In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home – and her fins – behind and live in the world above. But first she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking. This stars kids and teens ages 9-17. Tickets are $15 for students, $20 for adults and are available for purchase here.

Free Community Medication Take Back Day. 10am – 2pm, various locations in Cobb County. Nearest to Smyrna is the Cobb County Safety Village, 1220 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta. When medicines are no longer needed or have expired, it is important to dispose of them properly to help reduce harm from accidental exposure or intentional misuse. Help prevent accidental poisoning, overdoses and improper use of medications by turning in unused or expired medicine for safe disposal. Simply take your old medications to one of the drop off locations between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and turn them in by driving through. Each of the first 100 vehicles at each location will receive a free gift. No questions will be asked and no forms or ID are required.
West Cobb Street Festival. 10am – 2pm. 2655 Dallas Highway, Marietta. The event features art, crafts, health and wellness vendors as well as food trucks, free games, a DJ, live music and performances, clowns, and face painting.
Taste of Kennesaw. 11am – 8pm, downtown Kennesaw. The Kennesaw Business Association & the City of Kennesaw invite you to sample food from more than 30 local restaurants. Live entertainment all day plus a concert at 6pm featuring The Mustangs. The Taste of Kennesaw California Dreaming beer garden will feature acoustic sounds of Scott Thompson from 11am – 5pm. Kids Zone with inflatables featuring the 33′ Shark Slide, Euro Bungee Quad Jump, Rockwall, 120′ Roller Coaster Obstacle Course, & more.. Check out the Depot Stage as 4 local high school teams will compete in the Carrabba’s Culinary Throw Down for a share of scholarship money to go back to their respective high school.
9-12 Year Old Book Club at Switzer. 1pm – 2pm, Switzer Public Library, Marietta. The first book club meeting of the school year for 9-12 year old readers will Saturday, September 12 from 1-2 p.m in the children’s department at the Switzer Library. This is the second Saturday in September. The book to be discussed is “The Seems: A Glitch in Sleep” by John Hulme and Michael Wexler. We will spend time discussing the story and a have couple of activities related to the book. Light snacks will be available. Copies of the October book club book will be available to checkout at the end of the meeting as well as some read-alike stories for “The Seems.” If you haven’t read the book you may attend and participate and take home a copy of the October book.
Smyrna Heroes Benefit. 7pm – 11pm. Remington Hall at Adventure Outdoors. Pull on your favorite jeans, shine up your boots and join your Smynra Heroes for a boot scootin’ good time raising money for the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation (SPSF). This year’s “country chic” event will be held at Remington Hall at Adventure Outdoors. Attendees will enjoy a delicious dinner, ice cold beverages and country music while bidding on silent auction items, plus exciting new additions to this year’s event – to be announced closer to September! This is the SPSF’s major fundraiser for the year – with money raised benefiting police and fire community safety initiatives, fallen and injured heroes and much more. Tickets are $150 at the door or you can order here.

Atlanta Ballet’s Healthy Living Day. 12pm – 6pm. Atlanta Ballet’s Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre, 1695 Marietta Boulevard. Sunday is Healthy Living Day, an all-day healthy living celebration at the Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre in West Midtown Atlanta. Kids and adults can participate in a variety of free activities such as arts & crafts, dance classes, food demonstrations, and healthy living and nutrition seminars. There will also be fun door prizes and a healthy living book fair. The festivities will conclude with performances by local dance and arts organizations, including Atlanta Ballet’s Wabi Sabi. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
Brazilian Day Festival at the Mable House. 1pm – 7pm, Mable House Complex. The Brazilian Day Festival Atlanta (BDFA) began as a small community celebration of Brazilian Independence Day. But with the growing population of Brazilian and Latin Americans in Atlanta this event expanded to a formal public festival in 2011 attracting over 1000 participants in its first year. Unlike other Brazilian themed events like Carnival and Brazilian Day New York that bring talent from out of the country to perform, the Brazilian Day Festival Atlanta prides itself with using community talent and resources to put on a open and free event. All are welcome and bringing family and friends is encouraged. This is truly an event “In the Community, For the Community”. Tickets are $5 for adults, free under 10.
