Weekend Fun, Labor Day Edition


Friday

Tiny Tots at Sparkles in Kennesaw,  10am – 1pm, 1000 McCollum Parkway. Tiny Tots hours are for children 5 and under. Bring your favorite (non motorized) ride-on toy and let them enjoy the rink with other little ones. $5 for admission or $8 with lunch included. There is also a bounce house, giant rainbow parachute and more.

Marietta Square Art Walk. 5pm – 9pm. The 2015 Marietta Square Art Walk (formerly the First Friday Art Walk) takes place in historic Marietta Square on the first Friday of each month from March to November. The Art Walk is a free, self guided tour showcasing local original art. Enjoy late-night shopping, patio dining, fine art and live music around every corner. Local artists are hosted by Marietta Square area restaurants, galleries, museums, venues and boutiques from 5pm to 9pm, rain or shine, and participating venues display an official Art Walk banner in their window.

Young Actor’s Playhouse Alice in Wonderland.  7:30pm, YAP (Marietta). Alice is an ideal child. She works hard at school. Goes to bed early, wakes up early, lives a very simple and responsible life. Her world is torn apart when she discovers she is failing Algebra. Alice escapes reality and descends into a wonderful world where madness and chaos are the norm. Alice escapes to Wonderland!

Special Events

Bank of America Museums on Us. Bank of America customers get free museum admission to participating museums, science centers, botanical gardens and more during the first full weekend of each month. Local museums include: Atlanta History Center, High Museum of Art, Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the Tellus Science Museum.

Home Depot Kids Workshop. 9am – noon, all Home Depot locations. This free workshop is designed for children ages 5-12. All children will get to complete a themed craft, receive a certificate, an apron and a pin (while supplies last). This month’s craft: Football Toss Game.

Art in the Park.  10am – 5pm, Glover Park/Marietta Square. The 28th annual Marietta Art in the Park festival returns to Glover Park in Marietta Square from September 5 – September 7, 2015. The annual art festival takes place in Marietta Square each Labor Day weekend and features a juried exhibition pieces by over 175 artists from all over the country as well as local artists from the Marietta area. All items are handmade original work including paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, woodworking, pottery, and more. Also included: the Children’s Art Alley with many wonderful “make and take” art stations for visitors both young and old.

The Chalk Spot at Art in the Park. 9am – 3pm, Glover Park. The Chalk Spot is a street chalk art display for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Participants will have the opportunity to create one-of-a-kind designs in three sq. ft. spaces. The art will remain on display throughout the festival (weather permitting). Registration is recommended.  Chalk Spot participation is only $10 per person. All registered participants will receive a 30 count box of chalk and includes a goodie bag filled with a big box of chalk, two tickets to the North Georgia State Fair (September 24 – October 4), coupons from places like Chik-fil-A, Zaxby’s and Sarah Jeans Ice Cream Shop and more.

Smyrna Reads Kick-Off Event. 1pm, Smyrna Public Library. Animal Encounter with the ZooMobile. Meet live animals from Zoo Atlanta, talk to Zookeepers, and ask about the real life Ivan – Zoo Atlanta’s beloved “Willie B.” Smyrna Reads is a “One Book” project designed to spark conversation among family, friends, neighbors and strangers to build community and enrich the lives of Smyrnans. Smyrna Reads is sponsored by Smyrna Public Library and Advanced Disposal.

Michaels Kids’ Club. 10am, 10:30, 11, 11:30. All Michaels locations. Drop in and create a craft (themes vary by week). $2 for 30 minutes + supplies. Recommended age: 3+. This week’s theme: Football Windsock

Jitterbug Performing Arts. In addition to their ongoing classes, Jitterbug offers several drop in classes per week. This Saturday’s schedule is:
9:30am – Storytime (Interactive storytelling for ages 18 months+) $5
11am – Rock Star (Flux classes are for those potty trained – 8 years old) $15

Free Junior Chef Classes at Williams-Sonoma. The Avenue at East Cobb. 10am. Theme – Pizza. Ages 5-13.

Jumpapalooza at SkyZone Kennesaw. 7pm – 9pm. Select Sunday nights just got way more awesome. Grab your friends and rock the courts all night for one low price. SkySlam, Ultimate Dodgeball & Volleyball, the Foam Zone and more are all there to get you flying, spinning, and flipping out. This isn’t your typical night out, so get ready to fly high! Middle and High Schoolers only! $15 admission, add 2 slices of pizza and a drink for $3.

 

Labor Day

Smyrna 5K. 8am (packet pickup at 7am), starts on Bank Street. This inaugural 5K road race will benefit the various non-profit programs of the Smyrna Optimist Club and Smyrna Public Safety Foundation. Bib pickup and race day registration begins at 7am. The 5K (3.1 mile) road race starts on Bank Street and concludes in front of City Hall and the Market Village. Plenty of fluids on the course and food and fluids at the finish. Quality T-shirts given to all participants. Chip timing! Register here.
