{Small Business Spotlight & Giveaway} The Space Atlanta

TheSpace Featured

I first heard about The Space back in November. I was in a large group, with several different conversations occurring simultaneously. But something from one of the other conversations stood out to me. “I’m sorry,” I said, “did you say you take a trapeze class? Here in Smyrna??”

The Space Atlanta bills itself as a movement arts studio, but don’t make the mistake of hearing that and thinking it’s “just” a dance studio. They do offer a variety dance, of course. As well as yoga, massages, etc.  But they also offer aerials classes, hooping, and various other circus arts, which is where The Space really differentiates itself.

And best of all, this isn’t just for the kids. There are classes and special workshops for adults and children; beginners and those with experience. Creativity, freedom of movement/expression and improvisation are emphasized at every level.

To say I was intrigued by these aerial classes is an understatement, so co-owner McKinley Maclean allowed me to observe a recent child’s combo class. These Saturday classes include both dance and aerials over the course of 1 hour. There are 2 classes occurring simultaneously — one for 4 and 5 year olds and one for 6 and 7 year olds. One class starts in the dance studio, while the other starts in aerials. After 30 minutes, they switch.

The aerials portion had the children moving in a circuit with two instructors in the room. They ran through exercises that improved strength, balance, flexibility, and fun skills like juggling with scarves. With each pass through the circuit they also received 1:1 instruction in the fabric, where they began their aerial training by learning specific skills and experimenting with various free-form movements while supported by the fabric.

Brilliantly, they also offer an hour-long yoga class at the exact same time, so if you bring your child and don’t have a younger sibling in tow, you can treat yourself to a little stretching and restoration during their class.

If this has piqued your interest, check out their full schedule here to find a class for your children or yourself, and follow them on Facebook.

Or better yet, enter to win one of THREE free drop-in classes listed below and try it out for yourself!
